Mr John Lay who runs a car dealership in Saigon. He says that over the past five years they have done full restorations of about 12 traction sedans. Most of these cars are in use on the streets of Saigon as dayly drivers. In Saigon the traction still is a popular mode of transport, especially amongst foreigners. |
|
Mr Lay says that their greatest success have been conversions of old "wrecks" into rear wheel drive tractions, compleate with powersteering, air conditioning and power brakes. The cars are powered by reconditioned 1,8 litres Toyota engines. |
|
Why the conversion to rearwheel drive and Toyota engines ?
This is because they need reliability for every day use which you just cant get out of the original cars. Customers are happy to pay 10 000 USD for such a traction and this is half the price of a three year old Toyota Corolla. This is because of the very high taxes on newer cars in Vietnam. |

Mr Lay says that on his everyday drive to and from the office he usually see 3 or 4 tractions in varying condition. He estimates there are probably about 50 tractions in regular use in the city of Saigon. |
